Written on Our Hearts

“But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord. I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” (Jeremiah 31.33)
How many times have I aimed for a specific page or word count? When I post something on social media, there’s sometimes a limit to how many characters I can use. So often, writing must fit some type of guidelines. But sometimes what I lose in trying to follow guidelines is the message. Instead of thinking of writing as character or page counts, what is we thought about our writing as the tool for God’s love to imprint on hearts?

In Jeremiah 31:33, God is referring to the new covenant that’s coming. The old covenant, the ten commandments, were literally written in stone. God was preparing us for the new covenant – and this one wouldn’t be in stone. Instead, His perfect design was for it to be written on our hearts.

What a difference that makes! We can see something written, but until we believe it in our hearts, we may lose the meaning completely. He seeks a personal relationship with us. We don’t have to wait for Moses to come down the mountain with God’s covenant; He’s waiting to make a covenant with us in our hearts, and you can’t be more personal than that.

God wrote His words on our hearts, and we’re responsible for sharing that with others. When we write, our motivation should be letting God’s love flow through us and to use our writing as a tool to speak to others. God gave us a talent to write so that we could share His love. When we use that talent to do that, what a wonderful opportunity we’re given to be a blessing to others.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gifts you have given each of us. Please help us use these gifts to reach other in Your name, and to share Your love with them. You’ve written in our hearts;; may we be blessing and ready other hearts for your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
